My friend recently loaned me his new Canon 5D Mark IV so I could test itagainst my other cameras. Like many of you I was troubled by the specsof the 5D4 when it came out, mainly because of the 1.7 crop and thecumbersome codec.
Daniel, thanks for the vids– and continued success! bctt tweet=”Does the Canon EOS C100 Mark II beat version 1?” From Daniel / Cloakroom Media: I pre-ordered the Canon EOS C100, and loved every second of it (currently on 1300 hours ? and the Canon EOS C100 Mark II was a complete no brainer to upgrade.

But since I already own a C100, and I don't see a needfor 4k in most of my work (except for music videos), I have primarilybeen wanting a B camera to pair with my Cinema EOS camera. So mostly Iwant a camera I can use for cuts on an interview or a light camera touse on my Ronin M. At the moment I am not sure if a 16mm on the 5D4 in4k will be wide enough, but I am thinking I can always shoot raw with my5D3 via magic lantern if I need to go wider or I can get a 14mm or aTamron 11-16mm.
Setting aside these issues, I am excited about the 5D4sability to autofocus moving people while shooting and the ability to dofocus pulls and monitor on my iPhone using Canon’s Camera Connect App onmy iphone6plus. It would be wonderful if Magic Lantern hacked thecamera so we could shoot raw 1080p with the cameras focus features.Methodology:Since I borrowed the camera I didn’t want to put a scratch on it, so Ishot everything from my living room window. I also didn’t want toinstall any picture styles, but then he said it would be ok, so halfwaythrough the test I bought EOSHD’s clog picture style so I could comparethe camera better head to head to the C100.-TheC100 footage was recorded with the Atomos Shogun in Prores 422LT-4k was scaled it up 106.67% so its exactly 4x larger than the C100footage.-24p = 23.976-To maximize dynamic range I had the C100 set to ISO 850 and I used a 2stop built ND filter when it was bright outside.
The 5D4 was set it to100 ISO.-Grading with filmconvert and you can see it was applied in a reveal onthe footage.-I used a Canon 70-200mm 2.8L IS II lens. When comparing the croppedsensor modes to the full frame sensor modes I zoomed it to 115mm ish onthe crop sensors 200mm on the full frame sensors. I am thinkingsomething might be off with my IS after looking at this test, eitherthat or there are heat waves.-Edited in FCPX-Exported as 422proxyConclusion:I am leaning towards buying the camera, but I’m still not sure.
As youwill see in another test I did , the 5D4’s1080p is better than the 5D3’s 1080 and when recorded externally, it isprobably sufficient for recording live events for the web and the AFwill probably be invaluable for this application. Surprisingly the 5D4’s4k downscaled to 1080p isn’t quite as sharp as the C100, but it is lessnoisy. In addition the 4k from the 5D4 looks great in 4K and I would behappy to use it exclusively on scripted projects. Plus as you can seehere, the upscaled C100 footage put it in a 4K timeline looks almost asgood as the 5D4 4K footage.

However, I wouldn’t want the 5D4 to be myonly video camera because of the codec and audio inputs. It is good forsomethings, and not good for others, which is why I think so many peoplehave been upset with the camera. After its all said and one, I can nowsee the value of shooting in 4k and exporting projects in 4k. =)Please feel free to comment, as I would love to hear your thoughts.
